The United Republic of Tanzania is a country in eastern Africa, bordered by Uganda and Kenya to the north, the Indian Ocean to the east, and the Congo to the west. Mount Kilimanjaro (19,342 feet), Africa’s highest mountain is in North Eastern Tanzania. It is on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, at elevations between 4,500 and 6,000 feet where this coffee is grown.
The Peaberry coffee bean is a naturally occurring mutation where only one bean is produced by the coffee cherry instead of two. Since only one bean instead of two is produced there is nothing to grow against and flatten the seed, so instead of being flat on one side, the seed develops a smaller, oval or “pea” appearance. It is estimated that only 5% to 10% of coffee grown will produce Peaberries.
Since the Peaberry is a smaller seed it has a higher density, which creates a higher concentration of flavor, a desired attribute of all specialty coffee. Also, being a round bean helps to create a more even roast. Peaberry coffee beans have a similar profile to regular coffee beans from the same crop but also have a distinct difference. The Peaberry is brighter, lighter in body and in the more aromatic ranges of the profile than the regular beans.
Is a Peaberry bean better than a regular coffee bean? Like all of our coffees, this is based on your own taste buds and your personal preference. If you have never tasted a freshly roasted Peaberry coffee it is worth the try. Not only will it have the exceptional flavor, like all of our freshly roasted coffees, but it could well become one of your favorite cups of coffee as well.
